Voorjaarsvakantie

After surviving tests and my first few weeks at school, it was already time for the vacation. On Friday night the whole family and I (except for my host mum Jeannette, who was happily on the way to Florida) piled into the car and drove to Zeeland in the south of the Netherlands. We stayed in a holiday house for the next three nights and had a really great time. The first day we went to visit Neeltje Jans to see at how the huge dams are constructed. We even got to walk inside of the dyke itself. It was amazing to see the water rush under the gates at such a phenomenal speed. We also climbed the small toren and listened to the folktales of its history. As we got to the top we were fortunate enough to see the start of the sunset. We played Risk tonight, which I, of course, won J This morning my host brother Auke arrived and Reinder, Auke and I went to the beach to fly kites. I had never really properly flown a kite before, and I was surprised at how many people in the Netherlands fly kites or go kite surfing. There were hundreds of people on the beach, all enjoying the winter winds. Tonight for dinner we had gourmetten which is where you get to cook you own food in a really small pan, on your own burner on the table. So you get to cook and eat at the same time, being as creative you want with all of the ingredients. Australians really need to catch on to this amazing idea. The last day in Zealand we went back to the beach to fly kites again, but unfortunately the wind was gone, and in stark contrast to the previous day, the beach was completely deserted. Nevertheless, we still had a great day at the beach, and really relaxed before returning to Soest. Also, during the vacation, on Thursday Reinder and I went to Utrecht to climb the Dom Tower. Utrecht is a really beautiful city, and the view from the top of the tower was amazing. We had a guided tour and the guide was really helpful and made the climbing of the 465 steps to the top interesting and exciting. Even more happened during the holidays, as on the last weekend I went with Marije, Reinder, Auke to their Aunty’s house to help cut down some trees in the backyard. I got to use a chainsaw for the first time, and together we managed to clear up the garden. To celebrate our efforts we went out or dinner for Chinese. The following day Auke taught us how to walk on a tightrope in the garden, and then we set off home, arriving, after a few detours, just in time to watch the closing ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics. A great way to end the holidays.
